"I made a pledge. I said, ‘I’m going to sing one song a day for 30 days. That’s how it started. March 31," says Frank Canzoneri, a 77-year-old Hamburg native.
Thirty days. That's how long Canzoneri hoped the pandemic would last.
"So then, of course, by the end of April, things were not good. Things were getting worse and people wanted me to sing more," he said.
And it's easy to understand why.
Just listen to one of Canzoneri’s performances and you can tell he's got a great voice.
"I set my equipment up out there in the driveway and I started singing to the neighbors — it got started like that. When it got too hot, I moved it into my house," said Canzoneri.
Normally, Canzoneri spends four months in his hometown of Hamburg and eight months in Arizona. Due to COVID-19, he's stuck in Arizona with his wife.
With the help of his wife, Bettyann, and his daughter, Danielle, he decided to post his performances on Facebook to stay connected with family and friends in both Arizona and Western New York.
His songs took off.
"Some of the songs we had 5,000 people. So many comments. My daughter's fingers were hurting, responding. We always respond to the comments," he laughed.
Canzoneri also started accepting song requests for birthdays and people in the hospital with COVID-19.
It got to be a little too much, so now Canzoneri only posts his performances on Wednesday, Saturdays, and Sundays.
With more than 3,000 karaoke songs in his collection, he gets a little help from a friendly pal of 2020.
"Alexa. She listens to me talk. I use that because I can request the song and then I can hear it and it gets my ear back in tune," said Canzoneri.
"Quarantined with Frank" has gone from 30 days to five months.
One thing's for certain: as long as the pandemic continues, Canzoneri will keep on singing.
