Local leaders are responding to New Era Cap "resizing" its workforce to "new market realities."

The company made that announcement Wednesday while also saying it will bring back a majority of its furloughed employees from North America in July and August.

New Era did not comment on the specifics of what that new workforce size will be, but Assemblyman Sean Ryan says the company will lay off 117 people. He said the company is "once again letting this community down in a time of need.”

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz also didn’t hold back his thoughts on the layoffs after the PPP the company received expired.

"After seeing everything that we dealt with from New Era, whenever we have negotiations on the stadium, I don't believe we're going to give stadium naming rights to any Bills organization that can sell them and then have an organization treat our community as poorly as New Era did. Their name should no longer be on the stadium if they're going to continue to lay off our employees and say, 'sorry,’ ” Poloncarz (D) said.

New Era got the naming rights to the Bills’ stadium in 2016. The company laid off 200 employees from its Derby plant last year.
