Learning the stories and struggles of courageous freedom seekers in a space dedicated to their tales and bravery.

That’s what people can discover at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center.

But the focus is on the untold stories of everyday people who played a pivotal role and making sure all have access to this history.

During Black History Month, the center is partnering with M&T Bank to offer free field trips to kids in Niagara County.

Up through the end of March, teachers can book these field trips and the center will cover the bus fees and cost of admission.

Saladin Allah, one of the center’s visitor experience specialists, is a descendent of an Underground Railroad freedom seeker. He says it’s important to provide this access to everyone so they have a chance to learn this history.

“We have people who may have traveled from one part of the country to another part of this country,” Allah said. “But everyone has this story of a journey and a network and it’s important to recognize that because that is something that is instrumental in helping all people have a sense of freedom.”

The museum is open six days a week and closed on Mondays.

The center offers free membership to people who live in the city of Niagara Falls.

Teachers interested in booking a field trip can give the center a call at 716-300-8477.
