Here in Western New York, we don't have to look far to find an X Games medalist.

Jesse Kirchmeyer, from Java Center, is only 20 years old and has already taken home two X Games medals in Snow BikeCross, one for each of the years that he has competed. The Wyoming County native says hard work isn't the only favor attributing to his success.

"The support that I was getting back here at home, that was really what just kind of kept motivating me and pushed me to do my best. It was really awesome to have that success and really do it for the hometown," said Kirchmeyer.

Snow BikeCross has only been in the X Games for four years. People unfamiliar with the sport often wonder if it involves a motorcycle or a snowmobile. You could say the answer is a little of both.

"People ask me, 'Hey Jesse, what's it like to ride a snow bike? Is it like riding a motorcycle?' I tell them that it's everything like riding a motorcycle and it's nothing like riding a motorcycle, you know? You get on it, it's got the throttle, it's got the brake. But once you start moving, it's a whole other animal," explained Kirchmeyer.

Basically, a snow bike takes a motorcycle, but replaces the wheels with a track and ski system.

"Every year, it seems like the participation has been doubling, so it's really gaining a lot of ground," said Kirchmeyer.

He trained his whole life to become a professional motocross racer. One day, a friend approached the athlete about riding in the East Coast Snocross Circuit.

"At that point, I hadn't been on a sled in like 10 years. I said OK. I won both my classes... And then with my motocross background, we got to talking and it just kind of made sense for me to try out one of these snow bikes, while I was still racing sleds," said Kirchmeyer.

When it comes to the sport, people in Western New York and all over the United States are now asking about Jesse Kirchmeyer and his success.
