Former U.S. Rep. Chris Collins could be looking at a year and a day in jail.

The U.S. Probation Office recommends that sentence, followed by supervised release. The office also recommends Collins pay a $200,000 fine.

Collins pleaded guilty to insider trading violations last year, resigning his congressional seat for New York's 27th District in the process, a year after he denied any wrongdoing.

The probation recommendation is different than the maximum sentence recommended by prosecutors in Collins' plea agreement, which is four years and five months.

Collins is scheduled to be sentenced next Friday.

Last month, the Securities and Exchange Commission has announced settlements with Collins, his son Cameron Collins, and Stephen Zarsky, all of whom were charged with insider trading and pleaded guilty to related criminal charges.
