Local kids in the Town of Hamburg say they love skateboarding because it gives them freedom.

"When they fall, they get back up. It's a huge learning process. They have to keep at something. They don't get it right away. It's not that instant gratification that they're getting right now," says Charity Carrig, of the Hamburg Skatepark Project.

Some say that the local skate park has so many issues, a new one needs to be created.

"I went through the south towns and I couldn't really find anything that was safe for small kids to play at," said Timothy Carrig, of the Hamburg Skatepark Project.

The current skate park raises concerns for some residents as it is in serious need of repair and is located near vehicle traffic.

"If you repair it, you're just going to have to repair it again and again and again. A concrete skate park is definitely the way to go. It's a lot safer and it takes a lot less maintenance in the future," said Timothy

Because of this, the Hamburg Skateboard Project is working to get a new skateboard park built in a different location that is easier for kids to reach.

Sunday, organizers held a can drive to raise funds for the park. They hope to raise $250,000 with the goal of getting a matching award called the Ralph Wilson Built to Play grant.

If you didn't participate in the can drive or pickups weren't in your neighborhood, you can still help. Just drop off cans at the can and bottle return on Clark Street in Hamburg. Be sure to mention the Hamburg Skatepark Project.
