The Lockport City School District started the new year with a brand new security system aimed at making sure students are safe.

After months of controversy, phase one of the Aegis Facial Recognition System in the schools is complete.

Those in favor of the system say the technology can identify guns and weapons, while the facial recognition portion identifies people not allowed in school buildings.

If a match is found, the system will automatically alert school personnel.

When a gun is recognized, authorities are contacted automatically and the school is immediately put into lockdown.

In response to concerns, the superintendent says in no event will a district student be placed in the system’s  database.
