From a life-sized Buddy the Elf, to Kevin McCallister's fireplace and even the Griswald's station wagon, there was no shortage of creativity or holiday spirit for this year's Canstruction Competition inside the Hamburg Fairground's Event Center.
Five teams worked to create the masterpieces, many honing into the skills used everyday at their jobs, like Justina Zifchock, an architect at Watts Architecture and Engineering.
"I think our entire team had a blast doing it. It was really cool to use my skills and everything we've learned and everything we do on a regular basis at work, for something really fun and for charity," said Zifchock.
After Monday, all of the cans and other non-perishable food items will be deconstructed and donated to FeedMore of Western New York.
“This kind of donation is imperative to the work we do at FeedMore Western New York. This donation will take us well into the new year and allow us to feed the families of Western New York that are in need. One in seven Western New Yorkers suffer from food insecurity and one in five children have food insecurity in their lives so donations like this really do make a difference in Western New York," said Anne McKenna, FeedMore WNY chief communications officer.
Teams were given different tasks, including coming up with the best meal within their design.
"Elf behind me here was the winner of "Best Meal" and they really had a great variety of different types of protein and startch and vegetables and other things," said McKenna.
The team at Trautman Associates came together for their second year in the competition, putting in plenty of time and effort to create a 10-foot tall sculpture.
"If you consider all of the time shopping and searching for the right cans and then all of the people involved, we've probably put in about 100 man hours, which included everybody from Villa Maria College students all the way up to the president of the firm," said Suzanne Daddis, Trautman Associates project manager.
While judges have already cast their vote for various categories, there's still time for you to pick your favorite.
For the last night of the Festival of Lights, the gates will open at 4 p.m., an hour earlier. Some buildings like the Event Center are open until 10 p.m. which leaves plenty of time to see the canned structures before or after you take in the sights of the season.
