A 15-year-old Nichols High School student is charged with bringing a gun to the school.
Buffalo Police tell Spectrum News that school resource officers spent the day Tuesday at Nichols working to determine where the gun came from. Police say that requires them to place a trace on the weapon to see if there's a legal permit or owner, or if it was stolen. There is no word yet on the outcome.
Captain Jeff Rinaldo says a student tipped off school leaders Monday that the teen was armed.
A staff member then immediately did a search of the student's belongings. An empty handgun was found, though the student was also armed with bullets. BPD then charged the student as a juvenile with criminal possession of a weapon.
Buffalo City Councilman Joel Feroleto, who represents that district, says he's not shocked anymore when a student brings a gun into a school anywhere in the nation, but was surprised that it happened at what he called a prestigious school like Nichols.
"It's concerning because when people go to school they should be focusing on their education and learning. The parents should have conversations with their kids and their children about potential violence in schools. We hope that this never happens in this area, but that's a conversation that should happen," said Feroleto, (D).
"I can't applaud the student that turned this other student in enough. He or she may very well be responsible for saving lives that day. We stress that all the time: if you see something, say something," said Jeff Rinaldo, Buffalo Police Department captain.
In a statement Monday evening, school leaders told Spectrum News the student was immediately un-enrolled following the incident.
Rinaldo says because the teen was charged as a juvenile, his case will likely be heard in Family Court.
