A popular Western New York food truck is apologizing for apologizing last week.
Lloyd Taco Truck was caught in the middle of an immigration debate after it served lunch at a federal detention center in Batavia. Undocumented immigrants are held at the facility under Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s custody.
Thousands of people took to social media expressing concern over the truck serving lunch at the facility while also working closely with local organizations that serve immigrants. The firestorm ultimately led to the business apologizing, which caused even more backlash.
“Chris and I want to fully and sincerely apologize for our past statement after out truck’s visit to the federal detention facility in Batavia last week,” Pete Ciminio said in a news conference held Monday. “Our statement was hastily made, and we reacted too quickly to criticism we received for that visit.”
At the conference, co-owners emphasized that the restaurant does not “take sides” and would continue serving all communities.
“We make tacos, not war,” Cimino added. “We serve all communities. We go to all neighborhoods. We are not political. Why would we be? How can any business choose sides in our politically divided country and ever succeed?”
Lloyd has served the Buffalo community for 10 years. Co-owners said business remains steady, although three regular customers canceled stops this weekend.
Cimino said the company has always given half off to all uniformed first responders and military personnel.
When asked if Lloyd would send a truck back to the immigration detention center, Cimino wouldn't say yes or no, only that any request would be evaluated by the company.
