NORTH CAROLINA -- Old license plates are being phased out in North Carolina.
Gov. Roy Cooper signed a bill into law Friday requiring all car and truck owners to turn in their license plates, and to get a new one every seven years.
There won't be a charge for a replacement plate. The DMV is still developing a plan to implement this and notify drivers.
The new law will also require license plates to be more visible at night.
Local leadership challenged the federal data, saying it did not accurately reflect the city’s population.
