It was history in the making for Mets rookie first baseman Pete Alonso as he closes out a magical season.

In the bottom of the third inning Saturday, Alonso cracked home run number 53 for the year, passing New York Yankees star Aaron Judge for the title of most home runs hit in a rookie season.

“That just adds a little bit to it for us Mets fans,” said one person who turned out for the record breaking night. “You know, getting a little jab at the Yankees is always good. Respect Judge as a player, but it was great to see Alonso take the title.”

The record-breaking homer that was crushed over the center field wall was met by explosive cheers from Mets fans at Citified, moving the young star to tears.

“I was thinking about guys like Babe Ruth, like Ted Williams, and, like, obviously Aaron Judge, guys like that,” Alonso said. “Those incredible guys and the fact that I am ahead of those guys as a rookie, it is mind-blowing.”

While the Mets came up just short a few games to earn a spot in the post-season, fans say Alonso’s historic run has kept the end of the season exciting.

“I would love for them to be in the playoffs, believe me I would. My brother is a Yankees fan, but he is in the record books now so that makes it all worthwhile,” said one Mets fan.

This is not the first home run title Alonso has earned this season.

Back in July, the rookie was crowned the MLB Home Run Derby Champion at the 2019 All Star game, proving Alonso is no stranger to the long ball.

“He’s the home run derby king, he’s the home run king, he’s a powerful kid and he is ours. So, let’s go Mets and Lets go Pete and congrats, Alonso, we love you,” said another fan.

Alonso will still have one more game to tack on another home run for the year.

But because of this game, his name will forever be etched in Major League Baseball history.
