It’s been 18 years since the 9/11 terror attacks.
The Queen City is honoring those lost that day with a memorial at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Steel Crazy Iron Art, a steel art company in Buffalo, created the 9/11 Standing Tall Memorial for an air show at the Niagara Falls Air Force Base in 2011 in honor of the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks.
Brian Hogle, the company’s owner, said the memorial has been all over the country, including New York City and Dallas. This year, the memorial is at Buffalo’s airport.
“It makes people remember what happened that day,” Hogle said.
The memorial is 11 feet tall and weighs a ton. It took more than 600 hours to make. Since it was made, Hogle said it has attracted crowds.
“It was well received, I was a little taken back at how many people wanted their picture taken with it,” he said. “That was the most surprising thing.”
Hogle said the memorial serves as a tribute to those lost on 9/11 and as a reminder that freedom in the United States still needs to be protected.
The base of the memorial is shaped like the United States and features engraved names of every victim of the terrorist attacks at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
“The memorial is important for people to see and remember that day and be vigilant going into the future,” he said.
The memorial will be up for the month of September.
