The rainy weather forced Sunflowers of Sanborn to close early Saturday.

Louise Brachmann, owner of the popular attraction, was disappointed. She was more disappointed to learn people vandalized her fields after the doors had closed.

“It’s not really about the damage, it’s all about the principal of just destroying everything that we worked for,” she said.

Sunflowers of Sanborn boasts two sunflower fields, one for visitors to take selfies and pictures and the other where visitors can pick flowers.

They were hit by vandals Saturday after Brachmann said rain made the grounds unsafe and forced them to close down that day.

She said one of their new banners was muddied up by the vandals, who stole sunflowers and broke a chain at one of the exits.

Sunflowers of Sanborn reopened for business Sunday. When some visitors heard what happened, they were stunned.

“For somebody to come and vandalize it, it’s just wrong,” said Julie Beck of North Tonawanda.

“We don’t need people scaring would-be visitors off, it’s just ridiculous,” another visitor said.

Brachmann said they don’t want to press charges but they are stepping up security by having Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies patrol the area.

As everything at the fields return to normal, one thing remains constant: the support of the community.

“We do have a lot of people supporting us and it’s because of them, that’s why we want to do this every day,” Brachmann said.
