CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Saturday marked 50 years since landing on the moon, and the journey to space sometimes involved a stop at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Back in the 60s and 70s, Morehead Planetarium taught astronauts about space equipment. They also learned how to navigate through space using the stars.

Famous alumni included the late Neil Armstrong, who was the first man to walk on the moon.

"Very cool that UNC played such a major role in the space program. We trained 62 of the early astronauts. Neil Armstrong trained here more than anybody," said Todd Boyette, director of the Morehead Planetarium.

Renovations are ongoing at the Planetarium to add more exhibits. They're set to open sometime next year.
