The 11 Day Power Play has already broken last year’s record for donations, to the tune of $1.4 million.
That’s music to the ears of the hundreds of players on the ice at HarborCenter for the marathon game’s third year.
It’s also a song worth singing for those who support their friends and, in the case of East Aurora’s Young Relics, their bandmates.
Justin Kocent, one of the Young Relics, is helping to fight cancer both on and off the ice after a bandmate was diagnosed last year.
"I think it’s tremendously important in its gaming scheme,” Kocent said of the game. “Every year it gets bigger. We earn more money every year. I don’t see any sign of stopping and I don’t see any reason we should.”
Happily, the bandmate's cancer is currently in remission.
The game will keep going until next week Monday, with players on the ice around the clock.
Our own Kevin Carroll will be lacing up Wednesday, playing in back-to-back games from 3-9 p.m. at HarborCenter.
