The Peace Bridge reopened on Friday following a three-year rehabilitation.
The 92-year-old bridge now has a new, wider deck, walkway and observation area. Over the last few years, crews strengthened the steel beams that hold up the bridge, ripped up the base and added railings, light posts and electrical wiring.
Workers say simply doing all the work was hard enough, but doing it with our weather, while the bridge stayed open, presented an incredible challenge.
"The biggest challenge I think would have been the weather. Like you heard me say before, we had minus 27 degrees and we had 40,50 mile-an-hour winds constantly," construction worker Bill Friend said. "I haven't seen this in the daytime in so long I forgot what it looked like. We've done it all at night. The night's a big challenge because there's shadows everywhere. People coming up with headlights. It's pretty dangerous."
The $100 million project was the bridge's first complete overhaul since it opened in 1927. It was paid for with toll money.
