A Lockport man has died following a confrontation with police.
Lockport police say they were initially called by 39-year-old Troy Hodge's girlfriend, who said he was behaving unusually.
Officers arrived at the home on Park Avenue just before midnight Sunday.
Hodge's girlfriend said he was not acting like himself because of medication.
Authorities say Hodge was hallucinating and not acting rationally.
Police say at one point he made a comment about going back inside to get a gun.
The first officer on scene tried to close the distance between himself and Hodge to keep him from returning to the house — it was at that time a physical altercation began.
Officers restrained Hodge until an ambulance arrived.
Authorities say it was during that time he went into medical distress.
"The attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. It’s certainly an outcome that nobody wanted. It’s something we take very serious,” said Steven Preisch, Lockport police chief.
Three of four Lockport officers who responded suffered minor injuries as a result of the encounter. They have been identified as Lt. David Pytlik, Officer Daniel Barrancotta, Officer Patricia Burdick and Officer Marissa Bonito.
They are on administrative leave for the next three days, which is protocol when a fatal incident occurs.
Lockport police say they are cooperating with the District Attorney's Office, as well as the Attorney General's Office while the investigation continues.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the man's cause of death.
