It's been nearly two weeks since Buffalo Common Councilmember Ulysees Wingo brought a loaded gun into school.

  • Councilman Ulysees Wingo being investigated for bringing loaded gun into school
  • District attorney’s office not charging Wingo
  • Board of Eduction majority members want him removed from education committee

Now, the Board of Education majority members wants him removed from the council's education committee.

The board submitted a resolution Friday saying Wingo's irresponsible actions undermines his ability to work with the district.

The resolution will be introduced for a vote during the board's meeting June 19.

He currently chairs that education committee, a position he's stepped aside from temporarily as the investigation continues.

A message requesting comment was left with his office but has not yet been returned.

Wingo admitted he accidentally brought the handgun to an event at Riverside High School two weeks ago.

Wingo alerted Principal Jerome Piwko right away. Piwko then took the bullets out of the gun and locked it in the school's safe.

The district attorney’s office is not charging Wingo with any crime because, despite bringing the gun into school without written permission, he did have verbal permission from Piwko.

The principal is on administrative leave while the district investigates.

Wingo released a statement Friday evening, saying:

"I fully understand the deep concerns of the leadership of the Buffalo Public School District which is why I have already removed myself from the Education Committee and also have already formally announced that I am not seeking reappointment as Education Committee Chair. I have fully cooperated with all investigations and will continue to do so. I recognize the painful mistake I made and again, I apologize to the community and to my family."
