The scooters arrived in San Antonio last fall as part of a six-month trial which expired last month. The city is recommending a six-month extension, with a significant reduction in the number of scooters.

Roberto C. Treviño, City Council District 1, said City Council wants to keep the scooters, but increase the enforcement of safety rules.

"You know, the scooters are another form of transportation, it's a vehicle itself. We ask that people respect the rules of the road,” Treviño said.

He emphasized that riders must be at least 16 years old, and asked parents to stop breaking the law by allowing their children to ride. Other issues he mentioned were a lack of helmet use and two riders using one scooter.

The city is recommending 5,000 scooter permits with the possibility to increase that number based on ridership.
