After a brawl broke out at the Walden Galleria last year, community leaders have been working to make it more safe. Last month, a new pilot security program was launched, bringing peacemakers and security guards together.
The peacemakers tell Spectrum News they have been added to the roster of security detail. They patrol the mall during peak hours, and enforce the parental escort policy.
No one under the age of 18 is allowed to be at the mall without an adult escort. Only those who are aged 21 and older are allowed on Fridays and Saturdays, per the Galleria's policy.
The group's organizer Pastor James Giles says he believes the peacemakers' presence will curb any disturbance.
"Our presence alone is working," said Peacemaker Security Supervisor, Lenny Lane. "These are some of our kids, some of nieces and nephews that we see. Our presence alone deters a lot of things that could happen. It's been working, I think everybody feels a little bit safe"
There will be two to four peacemakers patrolling the Galleria on Fridays and Saturdays. The group says the mall is paying them for their services.
