The Erie County district attorney's office is investigating a Tonawanda police officer at the request of his own department.
A spokesperson for District Attorney John Flynn confirmed the investigation into Officer Howard Scholl III Wednesday.
The town police chief says the investigation is related to a crash Scholl was involved with while off-duty on January 19 at St. John's and Englewood Avenue.
An accident report filed the day after the crash said a woman driving Scholl's SUV slid in the icy conditions and hit another vehicle.
A revised report issued last week shows he was behind the wheel.
The chief released a statement, saying in part: “Our internal investigation revealed that violations of our professional standards of conduct and departmental rules and regulations did occur.”
Officer Scholl has been suspended without pay pending termination proceedings.
