Whether you file your income taxes or use a local prep firm, the Internal Revenue Service won't even look at your return until January 28.
While the agency is part of the partial government shutdown, the White House said Tuesday refunds will not be delayed for early filers.
Experts suggest people not wait until the shutdown is over, and file quickly, even if the return sits at the IRS to be processed. They say especially since the agency is following new 2018 tax laws, while the state is still operating under 2017's.
"So everything the IRS took away, New York State still has it on their return. People, as soon as they say, ‘Oh our computers are on,’ are going to rush to get in. So I would get everything done as fast as possible. Have it ready to go," said Christopher Fabian, EG Tax VP of tax operations.
The tax season ends on the April 15 filing deadline.
