Figuring out how to pay for college can be a daunting task.
That's why Saturday parents and students got a lesson on scholarships at the Merriweather library. The event hosted by the Amber Quinney Scholarhip Academy provided people with information about where to find scholarships and how to apply for them.
Founder and CEO Amber Quinney said college should be an option for everyone.
“So many scholarships go un-awarded,” said Quinney. “Every year, thousands and thousands of dollars are wasted because students aren't applying. It's not necessarily because they don't want to. You're right they don't know. There's a wealth of information about scholarships that students just don't know about. So that's one thing we're doing today; giving students information.”
Quinney says higher education is imperative, especially for teens in underprivileged areas. She says it's a way out of poverty and scholarships can help along the way.
