A case of measles in Erie County has been confirmed by Health Commissioner Gale Burstein.

Health officials say the person with measles visited almost a dozen locations around the county. The dates of possible public exposure are between December 4-11.

Symptoms include a runny nose, watery eyes and a cough for several days followed by an appearance of the rash.

Dr.  John Sellick, an infectious disease specialist with Kaleida Health, spoke to Spectrum News about the cause.

"There has been an uptick in many places in the United States. There's a large outbreak going on downstate right now and this is primarily due to people refusing to get the vaccines, travelers who come in from countries where there's no vaccines or where they don't use vaccines. So it’s mostly not immunized,” he said.

Anyone who may have been exposed is urged to contact their primary health care provider.
