SAN ANTONIO – For the first time in school history, the University of Incarnate Ward football team is playing past Thanksgiving.

  • First football playoff in school's history
  • Team to beat is Montana State
  • First-year head coach brought team back from 1-10

“It is win or go home so I am not ready to go home,” Senior Receiver Kody Edwards said.

The 24 th ranked Cardinals earned the school’s first ever bid to play in the FCS playoffs,

“To be honest, I still have the mindset that we haven’t done anything here yet and the only way that the world is going to know is if we go and win that national title and after that what else can you say,” Edwards said.

The team to beat is Montana State.

“We’re going up to a hostile environment, should be snowing, so it’s just going to be a real neat experience for our kids,” Head Coach Eric Morris said.

A year ago, the Cardinals finished 1-10, but first-year Head Coach Morris has turned things around quickly.

“We held them all to the same standard. Doesn’t matter if they made plays before here, if they were a returning starter, all conference guy, or a scout team kid, we treated everybody the same and gave them the same opportunities,” Morris said.

Amid the snow the flurries waiting in Montana, the motivation to keep the dream season going remains crystal clear.

“You can’t be naïve to the fact that it is going to be 19, 20 degrees but you always have to remember what your purpose is and that should be able to drive you and motivate you.” Morris said.
