A foreclosed home in Niagara Falls' Highland Neighborhood will be repurposed as a community club house.
The home at the corner of Grove and Highland Avenue was purchased by Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative and will be called the Highland Clubhouse.
City Council unanimously approved the purchase and resident-led project during Wednesday night's meeting.
Keyona Dunn, who leads the Wish Mentoring program and Krista Ehasz, a teacher who leads the Voices of Niagara podcast, believe the space would help their programs blossom.
The home is located just a few blocks away from the Centre Street Community Center, which closed a decade ago.
"I live across the street at the closed down community as of now," said Dunn. "Just the lack of activity — things that could be taking place there is lacking in the neighborhood and is very much needed."
Dunn says the Community Center's closure left children in the Highland Community with limited places to go due to lack of transportation.
Ehasz says the Highland Clubhouse will offer programs for children seven days a week.
"I think that something that's smaller and has a much more of a smaller ratio, a community feel, is open to families and everybody is something that we still need," said Ehasz.
