The man in charge of investigating abuse and financial fraud complaints within the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo opens up about his new role.
Former FBI agent Steven Halter sat down Thursday for his first one-on-one television interview since starting the job October 1.
The Diocese created the position to investigate allegations of clergy abuse and embezzlement within the Diocese.
Halter says all allegations are taken seriously, but could not discuss the number of cases he has or any personal details.
He did add, despite wide criticism, he has not been restricted from any files, and will work independently to see where the facts lead him.
"The church is in the middle of a crisis, and I'm here to make sure, that I investigate these allegations, whether proven or disproven in the end, and also work with everyone in the Diocese to make sure everyone's given a fair and unbiased treatment,” said Halter, director of the office of professional responsibility with the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.
A native of Buffalo, Halter spent 28 years with the bureau.
