HAMBURG, N.Y. — A brand new mural in the village of Hamburg won’t be visible much longer.
Alchemy Wine & Beer commissioned local artist Chuck Tingley to make the mural for $5,000.
"We paid for it with our own money as a piece of public art,” said Alchemy co-owner Anne McIntosh.
The new business on Union Street is adjacent to John & Mary's restaurant, which was granted a permit two weeks ago to build a fence.
In a statement on their Facebook page, John & Mary's owner Sharon Raymond says Alchemy owners asked her to remove the natural boundary between their building and the John & Mary's parking lot in order to build a sidewalk.
An agreement was made to replace the boundary once the sidewalk was finished, according to Raymond. She says the fence is needed in John & Mary's’ lot for safety.
"We respect the need for safety and liability concerns, but our reason for this outreach and social outreach is — our ask is communication,” said Alchemy co-owner Nicole Casell.
