BUFFALO, N.Y. — Are you looking for a restaurant to go to in a new city? Is your sink leaking and need a plumber? Did you turn to Google for answers?
Many consumers do, wanting answers at a moment’s notice, and that's what Google wanted to teach business owners through Grow with Google Monday. At the free workshops at Hotel Henry, business owners were taught how to take advantage of the free and paid tools offered by the company.
"So if I type in the name of the business, a lot of businesses don't know that they can claim the listing information that pops up there online. So they can be in control of updating their hours of information, adding photos, making their business look very trustworthy and like it's a thriving business," said Justine Benisch, Google product marketing manager.
Some established businesses that are already taking advantage of Google attended the workshop to see what other ways they could use it to expand.
"Google is a tool that we know that our customers are utilizing to not only find our business hours, not only to find our locations but also to shop with us online because sponge candy is such a popular product we ship all over the country," said Polly Perez, Watson's Chocolates head of marketing.
Some startup businesses just learned what they could do differently.
"Workshops like Grow with Google, they really help entrepreneurs like myself who are new to this whole venture. Just learn about where are the customers, what are customers looking for? They talked about micro-moments, so things like, ‘what are the moments where people look for you?’ and to really understand from a customer standpoint rather than what you're pushing to tell them," said owner of Kulture Khazana, Akruti Babaria.
But for all of the businesses at the workshop, whether just starting up or already established, they see promise of having a business in Buffalo, and companies like Google coming to town only help that promise grow.
"We're really looking for cities where the economy is growing, and then there's the appetite to really take on challenges and solve them and make sure these businesses and other members of the community are getting the tools and the resources they need that Google can help provide to them. So Buffalo is a perfect example of this because it's really a growing and thriving community and there's lots of room to grow even more," said Benisch.
And Google isn't the only company that's noticed Buffalo's businesses. Facebook is scheduled to come to Buffalo in July 9-11 to host its Community Boost workshops.
