Letting a baby sleep in bed with its parents may seem harmless, but experts say it's caused several deaths in Niagara County.
The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara is teaming up with social services to warn parents about bed-sharing. It's a practice county leaders say caused the deaths of three infants last year and seven others since 2013.
By comparison, there were no confirmed reports of sleep-related infant deaths in Chautauqua County in 2017 or so far in 2018; Cattaraugus County had one report of an infant who died of a sleep-related injury in 2017 but the infant died at a Chautauqua County hospital, the Chautauqua County Health Department says.
In Erie County, there were six deaths caused by co-sleeping in 2017 and seven other SID-related deaths that year; in 2018 there has been one SIDs-related death, one confirmed co-sleeping death and two suspected co-sleeping-related deaths, the Erie County Medical Examiner's Office says.
To help fund the education campaign, called "Now I lay me down to sleep," the Niagara County DA's Office pledged $1,500 for supplies and materials.
"We will never know the name of the babies that were saved through these efforts, but my goal is to not hear the name of one more baby lost," said Hon. Caroline Wojtaszek, (R) Niagara County district attorney.
Experts say the best place for your infant to sleep is in their own crib or bassinet.
