NEWFANE, N.Y.--Towns dotting Lake Ontario will soon have break walls to protect them from yearly flooding.

It's all thanks to a recently announced grant from the state, worth $615,083 thousand dollars.

The money has been allocated to the town of Newfane ($65,693) and village of Barker ($49,390).

The lion share of it ($500,000) will go towards an economic study and engineering grant, to build a break wall in the nearby Olcott Harbor.

Newfane leaders say they're preparing to meet with state and local agencies to get that study underway.

But in the meantime, they're keeping an eye on the water levels and preparing for the worst.

"We have a lot of sandbags made up and stored in our public works building,” said Town of Newfane Supervisor, Timothy Horanburg,"We plan on having the pumps sitting there, ready to go. Rather than like last year going to the state facility and going and bringing them here."

That meeting is scheduled for April 11.
