BUFFALO, N.Y. -- "Last night they were shooting out the door. One person ran right the second person came out, started shooting and then he ran right," said Lovejoy resident Joseph Stabler.

That's the chaotic scene Stabler says he saw outside of his window at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning near Checkmate Bar and Grill.

"After all the shots went off, the whole bar started scattering. Everyone from the bar came out," said Stabler.

Police say the shooting stemmed from a confrontation which started inside of the bar and then spilled out into street. They say a 32-year-old-man was taken to Erie County Medical Center in critical condition.

Stabler says neighbors have complained about the bar in the past.

"For one it's not, they have loud music when they're not supposed to, they're supposed to have a 30 and up, there's been anyone from 21 to 30 going in. They've been having all kinds of fights," said Stabler.

"It's not the first time, we've had bad situations before where people have left the bar and then people have followed them down the street and they've gotten shot. It's just a pattern here and the neighborhood has had enough, unfortunately," said Richard  Fontana, (D) Lovejoy District Council member.

Fontana says this latest incident is the last straw for the neighborhood bar. He says he talked to the Mayor and the police commissioner and secured a voluntary shutdown of the bar.

"They're attracting gun-toting customers and then the customers get mad at each other at nighttime and then they start shooting at each other and unfortunately this is the end of Checkmate Bar here on Lovejoy Street," said Richard Fontana.

Fontana says an upcoming hearing with the city and the State Liquor Board will determine the long-term fate of the bar. In the meantime, police are investigating this latest shooting.
