Dozens rallied outside City Hall to show support for former employees of DNA Info and Gothamist.
Just a week after writers voted to unionize, the owner shut down the two hyperlocal news sites on Thursday.
Many say they're showing solidarity with the labor movement in the City and throughout the country.
"I hope that it shows solidarity for us," said former DNAInfo writer Katie Honan. "But also more importantly for the labor movement throughout the city and the country. What happened to us happens to people on a daily basis without as much coverage. "
"This is an attack on millions of people throughout the country who depended on our reporting," said former DNAInfo writer Ben Fractenberg.
The former owner says the two sites weren't profitable. But critics aren't buying that, they say the owner had blamed the workers' decision to unionize for the shutdown.
