ALDEN, N.Y. -- The Erie County Sheriff's Office says an inmate died at the county jail in Alden Sunday morning.

They say 63-year-old David Stitt of Hamburg had an apparent cardiac event.

Stitt was being held on felony sex charges involving a child less than 11-years-old and a minor younger than 17.

Sheriff's deputies say Stitt collapsed in the housing unit's common area.

Correctional officers began CPR while medical personnel called for an ambulance.

Officers say they were prepared to use a defibrillator, but the device advised staff not to shock Stitt.

He was later pronounced dead by Erie County Medical Center staff.

The Sheriff's Office says it has notified the State Commission of Corrections about Stitt's death.
