BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The impact of Hurricane Maria and the recent string of devesating natural disasters is weighing on the minds of many Western New Yorkers.
Even legendary performer Gloria Estefan is speaking out about it. She's in Buffalo as the broadway show based on her family hits the stage at Shea's Performing Arts Center.
'On Your Feet!' is the musical about the life and career of Gloria and Emilio Estefan and the title of the show is part of their message as people deal with the devestation from the storms in many countries including our own.
"We try to boost spirits and get their minds off of the things that happen in life everyday," the pop star said. "With us, it's sharing our story of how we got back on our feet and repeatedly done it throughout our lives."
The Estefans have roots in Cuba and South Florida, rising to fame with their group the Miami Sound Machine. As their show comes to Buffalo during Hispanic Heritage Month, the first thing Gloria talked about was the massive destruction from Hurricanes in Florida, Texas, Puerto Rico and beyond, as well as the earthquake in Mexico.
Gloria also said she is offering aid to the victims through her foundation. The Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York is also planning on how to help locally.
Mayor Byron Brown declared it Gloria and Emilio Estefan Day in the city of Buffalo. Their musical runs Friday through September 30th at Shea's.
