SPECTRUM NEWS VIDEO: There is one more item for Broome County families to add to their back-to-school lists: vaccinations. While families prepare, the Broome County Health Department is reminding parents and guardians to make sure their children are up to date on the meningococcal vaccine, which is required in New York State. Students entering the seventh, eighth and 12th grades must be vaccinated before starting school. The vaccines help prevent meningitis, which is spread by the exchange of saliva or spit. The disease is rare, but if a child is infected, the disease can be very dangerous. Last year, roughly 800 students could not start the school year because they were not vaccinated.
