The city parks department got some help improving a hiking trail in Flushing Meadows Corona Park this weekend.

Volunteers spent their Sunday building two wooden puncheons, ten foot boardwalk-like planks, to place along the trail.

Parts of the Pat Dolan Trail that runs alongside Willow Lake are very wet and muddy, which creates a hazard for hikers.

Organizers told NY1 that the improvements will benefit all who use the trail.

"The ones we have their now are short little boardwalks so when it rains or the water comes up from the lake, they move around of they get submerged so it is hard to hop from one to the next, so this will make it much more accessible,” said Catherine LaPerche and FMCP Corps Member for Queens Parks.

The Parks Department plans to place 11 new longer and wider wooden puncheons along the Pat Dolan Trail.
