TEMPLE, Texas -- Authorities in Central Texas have charged a man with criminal negligent homicide after a 4-year-old girl was killed and her father seriously injured when they were run over by a houseboat.

Jason Bernal, 45, of Killeen was held over the weekend at the Bell County jail before posting bail and being released.

Temple police say the legs of her 37-year-old father were amputated when he tried to help his daughter. The father, who has not been identified, was listed in serious condition Sunday.

Police in a statement Sunday did not specify whether Bernal was driving the houseboat. It's not clear if he has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.

A funeral home in Belton said it will be covering the expenses of Katlyn's funeral. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family cover medical bills and related expenses.
