HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The new Hamburg Community Playground opened up to much fanfare and excitement Friday, just in time for the holiday weekend. Kids ran about the 15,000 thousand square feet of play space, which replaced the aging wooden playground.

A lofty project price of $500,000 was met thanks to residents raising a majority of the money over the summer. Assemblyman Sean Ryan secured a state grant to tie up loose ends.

Folks who live there also put in some sweat equity by building it over the last few weekends.

"We put so much time and effort in, our department, my staff. But also a volunteer committee with moms and dads and people who dedicated their time and efforts and it all came to fruition," said Village Recreation Supervisor Josh Haeick.
