AUSTIN, Texas — Rescue groups want to remind everyone that the Easter holiday is not a good enough reason to get a live rabbit.
During this time of year, animal advocates say rabbits are typically bought as a spur of the moment purchase.
Experts say rabbits live up to ten years, and are more complex animals than most people realize.
"A rabbit is not like a gerbil or a little cage critter. It's a big responsibility, they need a bigger area to romp around in, and specific feeding and care instructions,” said Gretchen Blackburn with the House Rabbit Resource Network.
Part of the problem is that rabbits aren't necessarily meant to be held all the time and that's hard for young children to understand.
Parents are generally better off just getting a chocolate or a stuffed rabbit.
