UTICA, N.Y. -- An exciting milestone for Rescue Mission of Utica members: ground has officially broken on their $13.8 million affordable housing units project.

The plan is to build a 42-unit apartment building, providing affordable housing for low-income working families and supportive services for formerly homeless families in Utica's Cornhill neighborhood.

The executive director says work on the site actually began earlier this year.

Before the project, a vacant building was at the site.

"It provides us with an opportunity to help somebody become whole; physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And so, with our support services that will be in that building as well as within walking distance of the mission, we can help them, support them, and get them on the right path," said Rescue Mission of Utica Executive Director Jim Haid.

Several sources are providing funding including the state's Homes and Community Renewal Agency and the City of Utica's HOME Program.

It should be completed by February or March 2018.
