In the wake of a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida that killed five people and injured eight more, airports around New York State took precautions and increased security in the interest of safety.

TWC News' Terry Stackhouse, at Albany International Airport, reported a heightened presence of law enforcement, but added that Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said the presence is simply to reassure travelers that there is no threat. Apple tweeted this earlier today.

The last flight headed from Albany to Fort Lauderdale around 1 p.m. today. That flight, JetBlue Flight 87, was diverted first to Fort Myers, then to West Palm Beach, Fla., as Fort Lauderdale's airport is in what is called a 'ground stop.' Flight 87 landed in West Palm Beach, and three flights involving Albany International and Fort Lauderdale have been canceled for Saturday.

A tweet from Stewart International Airport read that all services are temporarily suspended at Fort Lauderdale; only one flight, a JetBlue flight, was scheduled to fly from Stewart to Fort Lauderdale. One flight Saturday is still scheduled to depart around 7 a.m., and another from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled to arrive around 6 p.m.

At Syracuse Hancock International Airport, TWC News' Matt Jarchow reported that passengers expressed concern for what happened in Fort Lauderdale, but continued to go about their business. A higher police presence could be seen as travelers come in and go out of the airport.
