ILION, N.Y. -- The Cedarville Fire Department is back in service, despite a fire at the station Sunday night.

The fire broke out around 9 p.m. in Ilion.

The chief says that snow fell off the roof and onto their propane regulators. The gas seeped into the building and ignited once it reached the kitchen stove's pilot light.

The fire could have been much worse, but one of the firefighters was at the station at the time and helped contain it.

“He started measures to quell the fire with a fire extinguisher, knock it down a little bit, which definitely helped until people could get here and start firefighting operations,” said Cedarville Fire Chief Fred Sinclair.

No trucks or firefighting equipment were damaged by the fire. The fire department is still fully operational.
