Massena has been tasked with making a recommendation for which airline should fly out of its airport.

Cape Air has been a small plane company with a big presence in the North Country.

"The service has worked really well here, and to the point where Cape Air has now brought the ridership at this airport up to a record high," said Cape Air Senior Planning Vice President Andrew Bonney.

In one year, the airline has flown more than 10,000 passengers to Albany, one of its two destinations. Cape Air flies out of Massena International Airport, but its two-year contract is almost up, paving the way for another airline to try and fly out of the airport.

"We've been operating in the south and the western United States lot, and we're excited to come to this new part of the country," said Boutique Air CEO Shawn Simpson.

Boutique Airlines is a California-based company that started in 2007. The airline CEO says the company's young age doesn't mean a lack of quality planes or passenger comfort.

"Our planes are quieter, more comfortable; the seats recline, they swivel; it's more like a business-type experience versus where you might be more crammed in there on this tiny little plane," said Simpson.

While Cape Air says they might not have all the features of Boutique planes, they have established a system that lets passengers smoothly transition from one plane to the next.

"Some of the unique capabilities of Cape Air that people love having is that we have partnerships with all of the major carriers, so that people can buy a ticket from Massena, and have their bag checked through all the way to the final destination on any of the major legacy carriers," said Bonney.

With all that both airlines can offer the community, it may not be such an easy choice to make.
