BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Services was on Monday looking out for children's safety while they were trick-or-treating.

Officers went door-to-door to homes of registered sex offenders making sure they had a sign on their door saying no trick-or-treating.

Sex offenders like Alan, who spoke with Time Warner Cable News, also could not wear a costume or mask and was required to stay home from early in the afternoon until 6 a.m. Tuesday.

"They are looking out for the public, obviously, so it's reasonable, understandable. Fortunately, my boss is accommodating, and didn't have a problem with me missing work today," Alan said.

Approximately 3,000 sex offenders statewide were contacted by their parole officer on Halloween.
