Tuskegee Airman and Queens Native Audley Coulthurst Dies at Age 91

A World War II pilot from Queens has died.

Tuskegee Airman Audley Coulthurst was part of the first all-black military aviators in the armed forces.

The Jamaica resident was part of a bomber group that flew four hours a day and was also a radio operator.

He was also a mechanic gunner who maintained and repaired machine guns.

Coulthurst enlisted in the Army in December 1942 and was discharged in 1949.

But because his unit faced discrimination, he never actually saw combat.

For the last couple of years, Coulthurst appeared at numerous events to speak about his experience.

Audley Coulthurst was 91.
