AUSTIN, Texas -- The ITT Technical Institute has stopped accepting new students.

ITT Tech made the announcement on their website Tuesday.

The Waco Tribune reported the move comes as a result of the US Dept. of Education banning the for-profit school from enrolling new students who use federal financial aid.

The ban comes after the school's accrediting agency stated that ITT Tech didn't make the grade.

If the school loses its accreditation entirely, it won't be able to receive federal student aid.

The Education Department is responsible for making sure schools and colleges can handle the money they receive.

If they don't, the agency can either limit, suspend or terminate participation.

ITT students who are currently enrolled can still get their education and the institute can still accept students, just as long as they're not paying with federal aid or the G-I Bill.

But ITT chose to stop enrollment altogether.

ITT's future remains unclear, as most of the school's funding comes from the federal government.
