Western New York's hot and dry summer was certainly a good thing for some businesses. Bennett Beach in Angola saw a boost in visitors and shops around the beach also saw an increase in sales. Time Warner Cable News reporter Rebecca Vogt gives us an end-of-season wrap up from Southern Erie County.
ANGOLA, N.Y. -- On the last unofficial weekend of summer, anyone who's anyone was out soaking up the rays at area beaches. Bennett Beach was no exception.
"It's been good, nice family atmosphere. Like it, not real packed. It's a good time here,” said Brett McDougall of Cheektowaga.
More than 4,000 people made their way to the Angola beach this summer, triple the number of visitors this year compared to 2015. Erie County officials chalk it up to Mother Nature.
"Obviously it has to do with the weather; it was a nice warm, dry summer,” said Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Commissioner Dan Rizzo. “This year we only had it closed seven days due to e-coli levels in the water. Last year closed 39 days."
Robert Repetti said, "Definitely nice knowing I could come here and not have to figure out, 'oh, is this beach is going to be open today or closed.'"
Also benefitting from this boost in numbers is the Super Freeze Drive In, located just up the road in Derby.
"Season's done very well,” said Manager Joseph Landon. “A lot of new faces and lots of new people are always coming in all the time."
The proximity to Lake Erie, plus the vintage decor, is what Landon said catches the eye of potential customers. The ice cream shakes, and hot eats is what keeps them coming back.
"Last summer wasn't the best. It was too hot for people to come out. This year the weather was perfect and it helped the business to thrive,” said Landon.
While the atmosphere on Bennett was mostly positive, many were disappointed they couldn't swim. A shortage of lifeguards put a stop to swimming August 25. It's something the county hopes to remedy next year as they look to increase attendance once more.
"Long as we have the lifeguards, and we make the beach safe, we're going to stay open,” said Rizzo.
