DELMAR, N.Y. -- Slingerlands Elementary School celebrated 75 years Sunday with a birthday picnic for students, teachers and alumni.

The school that started with just six classrooms is now one of the largest schools in the Bethlehem school district with about 500 students.

Sunday's event was designed to give alumni the chance to reminisce with old classmates.

The school has also been compiling photos of students "through the decades" to remember those who have come through the doors.

'It a community where people love their elementary school," principal Heidi Bonacquist said. "As you can see we are expecting 500 plus people here today. Its a huge celebration of the school, the changes, the teachers, the families and especially the children.''

The oldest attendee at the event started school in 1942.
